Saturday establishes the map
After leaving luggage at your accommodation, begin around Graslei and Korenlei and make a short loop through the central squares. Identify the bridges and streets you will use later, so the evening walk does not become a navigation exercise. Pause by the water without blocking the narrowest points, and let the buildings on the opposite side receive more attention than the next map pin.
Choose one interior visit for the afternoon, based on your interest in art, history or architecture. Check the current entry arrangements and allow time for lunch before it. The compact center can tempt you to book several attractions, but a weekend benefits from leaving some daylight for ordinary street life.
Return after dinner, not after exhaustion
Eat near the central area or your accommodation, then revisit part of the waterfront after dark. Ghent's managed lighting gives familiar buildings a different appearance. Check current illumination information if photography is important, since decorative lighting is not guaranteed throughout the night. A short evening circuit is enough; there is no need to repeat every street from the morning.
Keep voices low near homes and avoid spreading camera equipment across paths. If rain makes the reflections appealing, still prioritize secure footing near the water. An overnight stay gives flexibility, but it does not turn the city into a private photographic location.
Sunday adds one new layer
Use the morning for a museum or an area you deliberately omitted on Saturday. Alternatively, return to a favorite square for breakfast and a slower look. The point is to benefit from staying overnight, not immediately replace the second day with another city. Confirm the route to your departure station separately from the central walking circuit.
If Saturday evening was wet or windy, Sunday can still supply an enjoyable daytime waterfront visit; do not treat the missed night photograph as a failed weekend. Keep a suitable indoor option for persistent rain and leave a comfortable luggage-collection margin. This route's strength is repetition with attention, which often reveals more than adding another distant attraction before the train.
