Use the Royal Mile as a direction, not a deadline
Start toward the upper end of the Old Town and work downhill along a manageable section of the Royal Mile. If Edinburgh Castle is central to the trip, check its official booking arrangements and organize the morning around the confirmed visit. If not, the streets themselves can provide the first part of the day without an entrance queue.
Side lanes and closes are interesting but may contain steps or steep surfaces. Do not follow every apparent shortcut without checking where it leads. Take breaks before fatigue turns the return climb into a problem, and wear footwear suited to the conditions underfoot.
Put the indoor alternative on the same map
The National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street is a useful planned alternative, not a last-minute promise that you can see everything inside. Choose the collections that interest you and check current visitor information. In heavy rain, go there earlier and shorten the Royal Mile walk; in good weather, leave a smaller museum visit for the afternoon.
Avoid replacing one exposed walk with another merely to preserve the original checklist. Arthur's Seat requires its own assessment of weather, paths, daylight and ability. It is omitted from this compact route, which can still provide a satisfying weekend without a summit photograph.
Change the street pattern on Sunday
Spend the second day in the New Town, using George Street and the streets around its squares to see the contrast with the Old Town's tighter spaces. Princes Street Gardens can provide an outdoor pause when conditions permit. A selected gallery offers a nearby indoor option if the weather turns.
Keep an eye on the route back to the station or luggage collection point. The city center is not level simply because destinations look close together. Allow time for the approach and the station entrance you intend to use, rather than finishing at a viewpoint with only a straight-line estimate remaining.
When an event changes the weekend
Festival periods and other major events can alter the experience of central streets and accommodation availability. Check the local calendar before deciding that a normally modest plan will be quiet. Book the things you genuinely need, but preserve a few uncommitted hours so an unexpected crowd or shower does not unravel a chain of reservations.
